Level 2 NVC
Asking for what you want - the power of making requests
In this day-long workshop we hope to inspire you to
get clearer about what you want
advocate for your own needs
have the confidence to make clear requests
and receive a ‘no’ without giving up on yourself
In person: Brynberian, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Friday - 15th September 2023
Do you want to get better at speaking up for what you need?
Maybe you don’t always know what you want?
And when you do, you don’t ask in case you get a ‘no’?
Do you find it challenging to express your desires in a way that fosters understanding and cooperation?
Do you wish there was a kinder way to communicate with your children but find yourself demanding when they don’t do as you want and using punishments and rewards as a way to get them to behave?
Do you get frustrated when you ask for something, the other person says no and that seems to be the end of the conversation?
Or maybe you don’t dare ask because you are afraid of the others’ reaction?
Do you feel as if others constantly ignore what you are asking for, or what ís important to you?
When others ask of you , do you find yourself habitually saying yes when you would prefer to say no?
Is it hard to conceive that you could say no without unwanted consequences?
These are some of the challenges we will be addressing in this workshop.
About the Training
During this deepening experience, Penny and Kirstin will build on the core principles of Nonviolent Communication and delve into the art of making requests.
We will be diving into the various aspects of knowing how to speak up for what we are wanting; discovering our personal blocks to asking; and holding ourselves in the equation when others ask for what they want.
We hope to inspire you to get clearer about what you want, advocate for your own needs more, have the confidence to make clear requests and be open to hearing a ‘no’.
You'll gain invaluable knowledge and practical skills to express your needs with compassion and clarity, paving the way for more joyful giving and receiving leading to enhanced personal and professional relationships.
Workshop Highlights:
Deep dive into the essence of requests in Nonviolent Communication
Be transparent about your longings and discover their power to build connection
Learn to craft clear requests that inspire cooperation
Meet and play with barriers and fears associated with asking for what you want
Cultivate more intimacy through skillful and heartfelt requests
Understand the importance of ‘connection requests’
You will be invited to practise with imaginary scenarios and your own examples of difficult conversations, interactions and feelings, in a safe way through interactive activities in pairs and small groups, and sometimes reflecting individually. There is no pressure to disclose anything that you don’t feel comfortable talking about.

What is NVC?
Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.
-- Rumi
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) was founded by Dr Marshall B Rosenberg and is now taught world-wide in over 35 countries
In its simplest definition, it is a way to support natural giving happen between people - giving that is free of coercion or resentment and done from a place of willingness rather than duty “like a child feeding a hungry duck” as Marshall would say.
It is a way to support and deepen connection in relationships of all kinds by discovering what supports connection and what decreases it.
The 4 step process of NVC:
Observation – without judgement or evaluation
Feelings – in their purest form
Needs – the universal longings that make life complete
Requests – strategies to get needs met.

What other course participants say:
“ Penny is thoughtful, insightful, and careful in the true meaning of the word - she works in a way that is full of care. She really got to the kernel of what we needed as an organisation, and was agile and creative in her approach to each session. She really went the extra mile in her generosity with her time and her home... and also knows how to have a laugh! ”
— Holly C, Director & Project Development Manager
“It is very powerful to observe how Penny enables people to get in touch with themselves - staying with them in a truly empathic, supportive way”
— Jan, Retired Accountant
“ Penny is such a skilled facilitator, you're able to learn NVC skills in a practical, considered way and thoughtful way. There is space to experiment with these different communication methods. It's amazing! ”
— Louise C, Project Officer
“I have already recommended you and your course to many people. I've said it is essential learning for anyone interested in building relationships with people or themselves.”
— Nicky P, Project Officer
“ Penny is a great facilitator and holder of a calm and safe space. She teaches you without it feeling like you're being taught!”
Naomi H, Project Coordinator
“The course was powerful and has had a positive impact on our organisation and staff interactions. Part of the effectiveness, was Penny's ability to engage, have connection and be trusted by each member of the sizeable team of staff; while taking us through the material which was presented very much as truths that we had known all along but just needed drawing out of us collectively. Penny also seems to have an ability to bring equinimity to contentious areas through, among other things, making sure the members of the group are all heard and understood.”
Daniel B, Director & Project Manager

Training Facilitators
Penny Spawforth
I love sharing Nonviolent Communication as it is so rewarding to watch people dare to be more able to speak up, have greater capacity to listen and to feel deeper connection with others after such a short time.
I have been sharing NVC for about 15 years in the form of Living NVC retreats, NVC camps, trainings and annual events for trainers to meet and connect. I also hold mediated spaces for people who need support to have difficult conversations. I am one of the founding directors of a community interest company called NVC Matters UK and in my spare time I love pottering in my garden, having fun with friends, sea swimming and nature walks.
Kirstin Heidler
Kirstin has ben learning and teaching NVC since 2014. Since completing her Master's degree in Software Engineering she has since dedicated her life to Nonviolence and
Nonviolent Communication.
Kirstin is particularly curious about relationships and how to improve their functioning instead of only focussing on the individuals. Contributing to her growth and learning, she has a male and a female partner, one of whom lives in London. In 2020 Kirstin moved to Wales together with her family (with partner Nicco and two children). They are living in a rural eco-village type community in a yurt and completely off-grid. She is also a counsellor-in-training.
